Today, Sydney-raised, Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Cassian delivers his long-awaited remake of Australian legends ICEHOUSE’s beloved song “Great Southern Land.” Wielding his signature melodic house and techno production style, Cassian breathes new life into the track that once rocked all of Australia in the 1980s. This new take from Cassian, which has served as a key moment in his live sets over the past year, is released via RÜFÜS DU SOL’s respected label, Rose Avenue Records.

Originally released in 1982, ICEHOUSE’s “Great Southern Land” became a staple of Australian pop culture. Following its massive popularity, it received an official release in North America and Europe, bringing the sound of Australian new-wave around the world. After receiving the blessing of ICEHOUSE mastermind Iva Davies, Cassian now gives the track another tour through the airwaves in 2023, this time taking it to some of the biggest stages in the world, such as Coachella, Printworks, and more.

As an Australian, I was born with this song in my blood. I dreamed about making my own version for 10 years before reaching out to see if it was possible. Having full approval from Iva Davies/ICEHOUSE and being involved with the legacy of this song is probably the greatest honor of my career thus far, one that I don’t take lightly.

After I was given the stems, I spent the past year slowly, carefully & respectfully piecing it together. Around 100 versions later I’m proud to present the final, which I even mastered myself. Huge thank you to management, to Simon Moor & of course to Iva and his team for making the impossible possible.” —Cassian

An accomplished producer, DJ, and mixing engineer, Grammy Award-winning artist Cassian has cemented his name as one of the most versatile talents to emerge from Sydney’s flourishing electronic scene. Cassian became the first artist on RÜFÜS DU SOL’s imprint Rose Avenue in 2018 which led to several more singles on the label and ultimately the release of his debut album, Laps, in 2020. Since then he’s followed up his debut with multiple Beatport-chart-topping releases, such as his remix of Jimi Jules’ “My City’s On Fire” alongside Tale Of Us’s Anyma. A respected and seasoned performer, Cassian has played for tens of thousands while also selling out headline shows at NYC’s Superior Ingredients, commanding festival sets at Coachella, and making an epic homecoming visit to play at Sydney’s historic harbor post-pandemic.

Australian band ICEHOUSE was formed by Iva Davies back in the 1970s (under the name Flowers, although he would soon after change it). The band first got its start by playing pub rock until reaching mainstream success in the 1980s with new-wave and synth-pop. ICEHOUSE would eventually score Top 10 hits in both Europe and the U.S. with “Electric Blue” and “Crazy.” In 2006, ICEHOUSE was inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame and remains one of the country’s most treasured bands.

A track that he holds close to his heart, Cassian’s remake of ‘Great Southern Land’ is a love letter to Australia and is sure to be heard across his sets this Summer.
