Interview with OMAKS

Originally from Paris, OMAKS began mixing in 2019 before moving into production two years later. His breakout track 'Back Street Bass' opened the door to the wider techno scene, while his debut EP 5AM in 2022 cemented his place as a serious producer. In 2023, he challenged himself to release one track a month, producing standouts like 'Crowd Control' and 'Make Your Transition', further proving his consistency and talent.

Speaking to Mixmag, he explained how his journey began, “My entry point into electronic music was definitely the illegal raves in 2018. That’s where I really felt the connection you can have with people, like becoming best friends in ten minutes, or opening up about things you’d never tell your closest friends. There’s this feeling of letting go, like being in a different dimension.”

Milestones quickly followed, including his first gig in 2020 and the viral success of 'Back Street Bass'. “It was the first time people were listening to my music outside of my DJ sets, in their headphones, on their own. That felt powerful,” he said. By 2023, his monthly release challenge had built both a strong discography and momentum in the scene.

His DJ style is rooted in preparation and storytelling, as he explains. “Every two weeks I usually download around 150 to 200 tracks and start experimenting, mixing them together to find the best transitions. I love creating a real journey in my sets, full of ups and downs.”

For OMAKS, it’s about striking a balance between variety and signature sound. Reverse bass, acid touches, and catchy vocals remain his hallmarks. “When all three are in there, that’s when people instantly know it’s me,” he says.

Touring has shaped him as much as studio work. Playing with collectives like Verknipt, Teletech, and Doom gave him different perspectives, while South America — especially Bogotá — left a lasting mark. “In Colombia, events are more rare. People give everything from start to finish. The energy is just next level."

As for his busy summer and playing in brighter weather, he says he always matches to the context. It really depends on who’s playing before and after me, the vibe of the crowd, and even what people are telling me the night before. Sometimes they want a lighter set, other times they just want their heads blown off. So I try to take it all in, read the room, mix in the requests, but still stay true to what excites me. In the end, it’s always a blend of what I love and what the crowd’s asking for.”

This year, he launched his own label, ENERGIC, fulfilling a long-held dream. “This year we launched my label ENERGIC, which was a huge milestone for me. We managed to release one project every month, just like we planned. We’re taking a short break in August, but we’re coming back strong in September with a Various Artists release focused on reverse bass groove. I can’t reveal the names yet, but trust me, you’ll love it. We’re also planning an EP for the end of the year."

Looking ahead, OMAKS is preparing for a major milestone: his first All Night Long shows in Lyon, Paris, and Bogotá. “It’s the first time I’m doing full-night solo sets… I want to deliver the exact experience I’ve had in mind for years.”

With relentless energy, a clear artistic identity and global reach, OMAKS is fast becoming one of techno’s most exciting voices.
