Super Flu - creating memorable magical moments

Feliks Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz - that's Super Flu! Ten years ago, Super Flu first appeared at Mixmag with their exclusive special Halle Saale Mixture, followed by a live gig at Mixmag - The Lab in 2015. Since then, a lot has happened with the creative duo from Germany, who have released on labels such as Diynamic, Mule Musiq and Stil vor Talent. The two are constantly on the fly to present their unique sound at festivals and renowned clubs around the globe. With their two music labels Monaberry and DIDSCHN, Super Flu also bring musical sophistication to the world. Always one step ahead of the trend, Super Flu stand for a fresh and captivating sound full of magic and loving details. We spoke to them, so let’s dive into the talk.

Can you share the inspiration behind your latest track "AMA" released on your label DIDSCHN, and how it aligns with the artistic vision of the imprint?

"AMA" was born out of a wild ride through the realms of our imagination. We wanted to create something that felt like jumping into a whirlwind of sound, where every twist and turn surprises you. DIDSCHN is all about shaking things up and giving artists the freedom to let their creativity run wild, and "AMA" is our way of embracing that ethos with open arms.

How do you approach the creative process when working on music, particularly in the context of your latest release on DIDSCHN? Are there specific artistic influences that consistently find their way into your work?

Our creative process is like a mad scientist's lab experiment meets a jam session with your best mates. We throw ideas around, tinker with sounds, and see where the music takes us. Our influences come from all over the place – from the quirky melodies of old video games to the thumping basslines of underground clubs. It's this mishmash of sounds and styles that gives our music its unique flavor.

How has your experience of touring internationally influenced your music and the overall identity of Super Flu?

Touring the world has been one hell of a ride. From sweaty basement clubs in Berlin to massive festivals in Tokyo, each experience has left its mark on us. We've picked up bits and pieces from every corner of the globe – whether it's a tribal rhythm from South America or a hypnotic melody from the streets of Paris. Our music is like a travel diary, filled with stories and memories from our adventures on the road.

Let's talk about your mix series "Love Letters" - Can you elaborate on the concept behind it and how it reflects your artistic expression?

"Love Letters" is our way of sharing the music we're passionate about with the world. Each mix is like a love letter to our fans, filled with tracks that have touched our hearts and souls. It's about creating a sonic journey that takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions – from euphoria to introspection and everything in between. So grab a drink, turn up the volume, and let the music do the talking.

The visual representation of your music and brand seems to carry its own significance. Can you share insights into the visual aesthetics and artwork associated with your tracks and label, and how they complement the auditory experience?

We believe that music is not just something you hear – it's something you feel with every fiber of your being. That's why we put just as much thought and care into our visuals as we do into our music. Each artwork is like a window into our sonic universe, inviting listeners to dive headfirst into our world of color, texture, and imagination.

As a Duo, how does your collaborative process unfold when creating music or curating mixes? Are there specific roles or strengths that each of you brings to the creative table?

Working together as a duo is like a never-ending game of ping pong – except instead of a ball, we're bouncing ideas back and forth. We each bring our own strengths to the table – whether it's melodies, rhythms, or just a crazy idea that pops into our heads at 3 am. It's this dynamic interplay between us that keeps the creative juices flowing and pushes our music to new heights.

How do you envision your music connecting with your audience on a deeper level, especially considering the global nature of your fan base and the diverse cultural backgrounds they bring to the experience?

At the end of the day, music is all about connection. It's about that moment when the beat drops and everyone in the room is moving as one. Whether you're dancing in a club in Ibiza or chilling at home with your headphones on, our music is there to lift you up and take you on a journey. It's about creating those magical moments that stay with you long after the music stops.
