Captain Mustache & Play Paul join forces on “The Pathetic” ahead of Luz on Mobilee.

Parisian producer Captain Mustache has unveiled The Pathetic, the third single from his forthcoming album Luz, teaming up with Play Paul — brother of Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and a fixture of France’s electro wave. Out August 22 on Mobilee, the track seamlessly blends indie-style vocals with sleek electro-techno production, marrying moody basslines to a futuristic edge.

Captain Mustache has long thrived in the in-between, releasing on labels like Kompakt, Permanent Vacation, and Bedrock, building a catalogue that blurs the lines between techno, electro, and wave. Here, Play Paul’s legacy in French electronic music adds extra weight, anchoring a release that nods to both nostalgia and the harder edges of the current underground.

The B-side, "Dancing Like Muffins," drifts into brighter territory with cosmic synths, vocoder-led hooks, and a playful tilt that contrasts with the darker title track. With Luz set for release September 12, The Pathetic offers a glimpse of an album that expands Mustache’s palette while keeping his retro-futurist signature intact.
